My Landlord Can Piss Off….

I have been in this apartment for five years. Never once have I had an issue with my landlord until now. He came for a pre-inspection – it went downhill quick. I will NOT accept the condescending tone he took with me from the moment he walked in the door until he left. I was left speechless. I accept my responsibility but he needs to accept his part too.

I need to take a moment to calm down…..

Never have I had an issue with my landlord since I move in March 2020. I have always paid my rent on time (except a few occasions with valid excuses). Inspections in previous years have had issues but those were always on the landlord side and just minor violations. We have always had a cordial rapport with each other. When something needed to get some, I would call and he would fix it.

As you can imagine the last six months have extremely difficult for me. I have not had the ability to do things like I use to. I admit my responsibilities of cleanliness of my apartment was dipped to a new low. However, for the past two weeks I have taken 4-6 hours almost every day to do room to room and clean this place as if I just moved in. As I have always done when inspections come around.

I have been waiting for my landlord to come remove an old stove that’s been sitting in my kitchen for almost a year. My landlord had recent troubles on his side, some forgetfulness and finally came today to do a pre-inspection. The first words out of his mouth as he came in was, “..this place is going to be condemed and you’ll be evicted..” I don’t know how many times he said it. When I protested, his response was, “…I am not talking down to you, I am just giving you the reality of it.” Five times he said it.

Despite his tone, I continued to keep my cool. Meanwhile, he told me things about his own life which made my blood boil. First, he’s months (2-3) late on his mortgages. Second, there are things that need to be fixed for inspection, so he just walks away with, “…I’ll just get cited, have to pay for a reinspection but they’ll come back later..” Third, during our conversation, I reminded him, “I always pay rent on time and aren’t I the only one of your tenants that pay full rent.” His response, “Yes, but if you get evicted, I just need to clean this place up and I can get a lot more.” Seriously? This man is so delusional, it’s not funny. So be it.

In the end, I am going to do what I need to do on my part to ensure my responsibilities of the inspection are passed. I know I have four days before the inspection. As I tried to ensure my landlord – I am committed to having this done. If I lose sleep over this, it’s not an issue because right now I have nothing else on my calendar but this inspection. While I highly doubt his thoughts of eviction will come true, that is another issue I will deal with later down the road.

In the future, I will not take a condescending tone from a person who won’t take responsibility for his own faults. I am fully aware of my responsibilities and will fulfill them, despite what my landlord my thinks. In the meantime, he can just piss off.

I can only handle one mole hill at a time.

    Hi MIKEYKJR:

Here are several thoughts which might be of help:

    1. AL-ANON “3C’s”: I didn’t cause it, I can’t control it, I can’t cure it.
    2. Rejection brings the opportunity for your redirection.
    3. When you decide it is time to walk away, it is not to spite the other person or make them miss you, it’s because you need/deserve something better.
    4. Whatever happens, believe that you are fully equipped to handle it.
    5. When you feel you are at your witt’s end, it’s time to let go and let God.

Keep up your good work which is a big help to all of us readers.

    Mike P.
