My Special Two (Cats Update)

It seems like I had my two children (cats) all my life as our lives begin to normalize. Still have ups and downs every once in a while. As we observe each other, we begin to learn our different personalities. This decision will be on the top of my best of all time.

It hasn’t even been two weeks yet the kids and I are down to a regular schedule. Despite my inconsistent work schedule (part-time) and working during the night (overnight/third/graveyard shift) we have adjusted quite well. They know my routine expecting certain things are certain times (i.e. ‘Yum Yums’ or food when I wake up and when I come home from work). I also know what to expect of them. For instance, they are full of energy, rowdy and mischievous when they wake up or I come home from work. But after a while they calm down after expelling all the energy. Then its time for one on ones (tummy rubs and lovings). After all is said and done, they do what most cats do – nap.

They have learned the do’s and do not’s in the house very well. But every once and a while, I’ll hear, “Thump…..yelp!….meow”. In my mind, the whole world has ended and I call out, “What did you do now?” Usually I come up to one or both of them sprawled on the ground looking up at me with sad eyes. Yet every now and then (like jumping on the kitchen counter or stove) I still have to use a strong voice with a simple, “No or Down”.

Big Boy is the boss, Little One tends to do much of what Big Boy does. It’s nice to see them get along playing with each other like little children. But when Little One has had enough of Big Boy she let’s him know it. Just a quite swipe of the paw and Big Boy’s running. But Little One still tends to by shy and timid. On the other hand, Big Boy wants everything himself. First food dish down, his or he’s eating the other one while I’m putting the second one down. When I get home from work, I can hardly walk in the front door because I have a giant fluff ball going in and out of my legs. Lately, Big Boy has been sleeping with me, loudly purring and licking my face to announce his presence. There are just so many things between the two of them – they are really do adorable.

When I first saw their pictures posted on Facebook my impulsive thinking turned on instead of my taking a breath and really thinking about this decision. But once I typed a response, I accepted what the future consequences were going to be. But in the end, my happiness in life has grown exponentially since they have come into my life. A co-worker brought a smile to my face saying, “Something has changed. You look more happy now. It’s the kids, isn’t it!” I am, 150%.

Getting to Know Each Other

It’s been a couple of days since Big Boy and Little One arrived. Already we have had our ups and downs which was expected. Yet, each passing day they appear to seem more comfortable around me, the surroundings and daily routine.

Big Boy and Little One arrived on January 13, 2024. I actually found out on that day their gender was known: Big Boy-male, Little One-female. The woman who came to drop them off said they “were not neutered”. Honestly, I’m surprised by that. If that were to be the case, Little One might have had a little by now during the time with the elderly lady. That just doesn’t make sense with me. But..just in case..I’m taking to a vet very soon.

The first thing I did was introduce them to their kitty litter pan and feeding dishes. Big Boy used it almost immediately. Little One I was concerned about because I hadn’t seen her use it. As of today, goal accomplished there.

Both were skidish at first and still are to some degree. For instance, when I stand up, they scat around the room. Not so much, as on their first day. Both are now much more comfortable. The both have sat on my lap for a couple of minutes too!

I don’t have the biggest apartment. I live on the second story of a house with two bedrooms, living/family room, kitchen and bathroom. The second bathroom was closed. I wanted to get them accustomed to where I was at most of the time. I had my bedroom door open for them to explore and play around. Oh they did!

After some exploration Big Boy did his first “no-no” with a small mess in my bedroom. No big deal to clean up thankfully. Still to this day they are going room to room to explore. I finally opened the second bedroom which is an empty room with a couple of broke TV’s sitting on the floor. I’m not worried about the kids knocking ’em down. However, I do such the door at night because I don’t want them to play in their at night because right below is my neighbors kids bedroom. I think their down knocking everything they can around the house down now.

Last night, I finally got the almost perfect picture of the both of them.

Two New Additions to My Family – Cats!

A majority of my life I’ve lived alone, just me, myself and I. Life can be more enjoyable having someone physically right next to you. All relationships have highs and lows but the overall experience typically is unforgettable. Animals are something I have enjoyed during various periods of my life. The right time came and I have expanded my family.

Though I am not a huge Facebook fan, I do check posts periodically. I am a member of a local FB group which posts happenings around town. The other day I scrolled down to find a post “2 sweet kitties need a home or homes due to allergies 😞 black is female and orange is male. Very friendly and playful at around one year old 🙂“. I’ve had been thinking of adopting but various opportunities didn’t work out. But something told me to reach out – again.

After a few messages back and forth, the poster and I got to know each other. She explained the cats were owned by an elderly woman who recently moved to a nursing home. Unfortunately, the cats were left behind. Luckily, the poster’s son heard about this and took the cats in. However, he is allergic to cats, so his mother reached out to anyone how might be able to care for them in the future. Nothing is really known about the cats: gender, shots, years old or if they have been neutered or spayed, etc.

I don’t even know what kind they are. A cat person at work told me what kind they are (I have forgotten) and some interesting stories. We’ll have to see if they come true.

You’re probably thinking – this guy is crazy adopting not one but two cats who he knows literally nothing about. That’s me – crazy! Do I regret it – Nope! Go all in or nothing!

Here they are:

Big Boy
Little Girl

More to come in future posts on the Kitty Log!
